How To Make Asian Wings
To begin, we first need to remove as much moisture from the chicken wings as possible. I place all of my wings in a big bowl and use a paper towel to absorb any excess liquid. If you don’t do this, you will not have a crispy wing. We don’t do soggy wings around here.
Next, the wings are simply tossed in the Chinese Five Spice, Baking Powder, Granulated Garlic and Onion, and Kosher Salt. I place them on a baking sheet fitted with oven-safe baking rack and into a preheated 425ยฐ oven. Turn the wings every 15-20 minutes until they are cooked through. This will take about an hour.
While the wings are in the oven, you just need to mix up the sauces. Grab two mixing bowls and a whisk. For the peanut ginger sauce, mix together the sweet chili sauce, peanut butter, Tamari, sesame oil, grated garlic and ginger, and the lime juice. Whisk these together until it’s well combined. (Insider note: This also makes a fantastic salad dressing!)
For the sweet chili sesame sauce, do the same thing. Just whisk all of the ingredients together. If you like a sweeter sauce, just add honey to your taste. Likewise, if you like spicy, add some chopped jalapeรฑos.
Once the wings have cooked through, garnish with some green onions and chopped peanuts. And, dip. And, dip some more.
Tips and Tricks for a crispy chicken wing
dry the wings
The first and most important trick for a crispy chicken wing is to dry it before you begin. Any excess moisture will prevent a crisp wing. Grab some paper towels and dry the wings as much as you can.
baking powder
The next tip, and this probably sounds weird, but use baking powder. Baking powder paired with the kosher salt will create a crispy skin without the need of a deep fryer. There is an entire scientific/technical explanation that I don’t understand so I’ll skip that. Just grab the baking powder.
This is also very, very important. Make sure you use baking powder AND NOT baking soda. You will be very sad if you get them mixed up. I don’t want you to be sad.
Baking racks
Another trick is to cook the chicken wings on an oven-safe baking rack. This will elevate the wings off of the baking sheet allowing air to flow underneath them, thus creating a crispy wing.
frequently asked questions
As long as you use Tamari instead of soy sauce, this recipe is 100% gluten-free.
There is zero dairy in this chicken wing recipe. No worries for my dairy-free peeps.
In a word, amazing. Chinese Five Spice is generally a blend of cinnamon, cloves, fennel seed, star anise, and black peppercorns. The ratios will vary from brand to brand. I highly encourage you to try it if you have not. They make this Crispy Asian Chicken Wings recipe shine.
air fryer instructions
You can absolutely make chicken wings in the air fryer! Follow recipe instructions through step 2 and cook in a preheated 400ยฐ air fryer for 15 minutes. Turn the wings over and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.
recipe substitutions
I have a peanut allergy. Any substitutions?
If you have a peanut allergy, no worries. There are plenty of substitutions for the peanut ginger dipping sauce. Almond butter would be the first thing to come to mind. However, any nut or seed butter you like would be just fine.
Are there substitutions for the Chinese five spice?
If you don’t have any or don’t like the five spice blend, you can simply leave it out. You’ll still be left with an amazing crispy chicken wing. However, you could substitute with:
- Curry Powder
- Garam Masala
- Za’atar
- Smoked Paprika
- Cajun Seasoning
