Ingredients
Most of the ingredients in this easy, Chocolate Tart recipe are probably in your pantry or fridge right now. When I say this recipe it's simple, it truly is. Ingredients and all. Here’s everything you’ll need to make it:
- Chocolate Sandwich Cookies - I use Oreos, but you can use your favorite sandwich cookie.
- Granulated Sugar - To sweeten the crust up just a tad.
- Butter - I prefer salted, but go with your preference.
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips - If you like a more bitter chocolate chip, use that. Milk chocolate chips will be great as well.
- Heavy Cream - For the decadent richness of the filling.
- Eggs - Lets the filling set up.
- Vanilla Bean Paste - Vanilla extract will also work.
- Flaky Sea Salt and Chocolate Shavings - For garnish
See recipe card for exact quantities.
Equipment
The equipment needed for this chocolate tart recipe is very basic and minimal. You'll just need a few things you probably have lying around.
- Food Processor - To make the cookie crumbs.
- Tart Pan - Use one with a removable bottom.
- Measuring Cups and Spoons - Be precise with the heavy cream measurements.
- Saucepan - To simmer the cream
- Whisk - To whisk. Whisk whisk whisk. Kidding aside, especially for the chocolate chip melting, use one.
- Sheet Pan - This takes any issue of handling the tart pan away. It's there just to provide a steady base for the pan.
Instructions

Step 1: Gather the ingredients.

Step 2: Make and bake the filling.
For The Crust
To begin the crust for our Chocolate Tart, we need to make some cookie crumbs.
In a food processor, grind the chocolate cookies until they become crumbs roughly the size of breadcrumbs. Transfer the cookie crumbs to a mixing bowl and stir in the sugar, salt, and melted butter until well incorporated.
This should be consistency of wet sand. It should not be super wet, but moist enough to mold with your fingers.
Press the mixture evenly (I use my fingers), into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch tart pan with a removable bottom.
Place the tart pan with crust onto a sheet pan. Bake until the crust is set - about 10 minutes. Let this cool completely.
Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Step 3: Make and bake the filling.

- Step 2: Make and add the glaze.
For The Filling
Bake the chocolate tart until the edges begin to puff ever so slightly. The center will still be jiggly - about 18-20 minutes. Let the tart cool completely or until the filling is well set.
In a small mixing bowl, lightly beat the eggs and vanilla together until well combined. Set this aside.
Add the chocolate chips to a separate mixing bowl.
Over medium heat, bring the cream to just a simmer in a small saucepan. Pour the cream over the chocolate and let the mixture sit for about 1 minute. Stir until the mixture is smooth and no chocolate lumps remain.
Hint: The filling may look a little bubbly after baking. Keep calm. Everything is fine. You'll be pouring the glaze over the top of this, so no one will see any imperfections.
For The Glaze
The glaze for the chocolate tart takes a mere two ingredients. All you have to do is combine the very hot heavy cream with more chocolate chips. Stir until the glaze is smooth and free of any chip pieces.
Pour the glaze over the top of the chocolate tart, spreading it with an offset spatula if needed. Let the tart hang out in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes.
Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and chocolate shavings. Slice, serve, and enjoy!
Substitutions and Variations
As with all of my recipes, feel free to experiment and make this your own!
- Cookies - Use your favorite sandwich cookie. There are so many to choose from now - Peanut Butter Chocolate Cookies, Vanilla Sandwich Cookies, etc. Experiment and have fun with it!
- Chocolate Chips- If you are not a fan of semi-sweet chocolate, you can use either milk chocolate chips or even white chocolate chips. Likewise, you can use a bitter chocolate if that is more your taste. I do recommend using a good quality chocolate, no matter which one you choose.
- Gluten-Free - All you need to to make this chocolate tart recipe gluten free is swap out the cookies. They make wonderful gluten-free chocolate sandwich cookies. Use your favorite.
- Garnishes - Sprinkles, chopped nuts, or even a lovely drizzle of caramel would be fantastic to finish this recipe.

Storage
This chocolate tart needs to be kept in the refrigerator. It will stay good in an airtight container for 4-5 days.
This recipe also freezes quit well. Make sure the chocolate tart is chilled, wrap it with plastic wrap and then foil. Store it in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you're ready, just let it thaw out in the fridge. However, I love to eat this frozen. It's really, really, really good.
Top Tip
Top the finished chocolate tart with the flaky sea salt. The salt brings out the flavor of the chocolate - it enhances it and is so, so good. Don't skip this. It makes a huge difference in taste, and for the better!
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don't have a tart pan?
No worries at all! You can use a pie pan or a springform pan. They will both work.
Can I microwave the cream instead of heating it on the stovetop?
You can! Just make sure to heat the cream until it is just at a bare simmer. It needs to be hot enough to melt the chocolate chips for the chocolate tart itself and for the glaze.
