Garlic Knots With Ham and Cheese Recipe
Ingredients
Garlic Knot Dough
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 2½ cups ap flour
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
Filling
- 1 stick butter, melted
- 2 tablespoon Everything But the Bagel Seasoning
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup ham, finely diced
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, add water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 10-15 minutes until bubbles form.
- Add flour and salt. Using a dough hook, mix on low for 1 minute. Increase speed to medium until dough comes away from the bowl.
- Drizzle olive oil over the dough ball to prevent drying. Cover with a kitchen towel and set in a warm area. Let rise about 2 hours or until dough has doubled in size.
- While dough rises, melt butter. Add Bagel seasoning and mix to incorporate.
- Once dough has doubled in size, roll out on a floured surface. Form dough into a square about ¼ inch in thickness. This does not have to be perfect.
- Evenly distribute ham, cheese, and butter mixture onto rolled out dough. Reserve 2-3 tablespoons of butter mixture for after baking.
- Carefully fold dough in half. Cut that half into halves until you have 10-12 even strips. Slightly pull each strip and tie into a knot. Ham and cheese will fall out. It's ok! Simply place any extra on top of the knot.
- Place knots onto a parchment lined baking sheet and let rest for about 20 minutes.
- After resting, place knots into a 375° oven for 20-25 minutes or until just golden brown.
- Remove from oven and brush with remaining butter mixture. Enjoy!

Pull Up A Chair and Let's Chat!
Garlic knots are a longtime favorite for anyone who loves buttered bread. If you can find someone who doesn't like this sort of thing, I fear there is a serious issue at hand. Get them to the ER.
This recipe is so simple, but the addition of the ham and cheese just sends them over the top. Now, you'll have a buttery, cheesy, hammy knot that is just too good to put down.
Serve them for a savory breakfast treat, as an appetizer, or as a lovely accompaniment to a light dinner salad situation. No matter how you do it, you've got to try them!
How To Make Them
I've said it before, but I'm not a natural baker. Bread making is, quite honestly, a little intimidating to me. So when I say these garlic knots are simple to make, I mean it. You cannot mess these up. Promise.
I'll give you the brief rundown here, but the details will live in the recipe card below. All you have to do is:
- Prepare the dough.
- Let the dough rise.
- Prep the filling ingredients.
- Fill and form the garlic knots.
- Bake and serve.
To ya it was easy!

Tips, Tricks, and Variations
- If you don't feel like making dough, store bought pizza dough is a fantastic substitution.
- Play with the filling. Bacon, sausage, and even salami make great proteins. Use your favorite shredded cheese.
- Shred your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheese is coated with anti-caking agents that prevent it from melting correctly. Don't do it.
- If you don't want to use ham and cheese, you can leave them out.
- Save some of the butter for the end. You'll want to add plenty after the garlic knots have baked. Who doesn't like extra melty butter?!

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I serve ham and cheese garlic knots?
These soft, buttery garlic knots are wonderful straight out of the oven. My kids attack them when they're fresh. They are perfect dunked in marinara or a bowl of warm, homemade soup. But, honestly, my favorite way to use them is for an easy breakfast on the go. Simply pop them in the microwave and breakfast is served!
Storage Instructions
Leftover will stay good in the fridge for up to 3 days. Simply pop them in the microwave to reheat.
Leftovers also freeze wonderfully. Let them cool completely and freeze them in a zip top bag or airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw when you're ready to use!
