The weather is finally cooling off here and I've been waiting on this for months. I thrive when Fall shows up. It just makes me happy. This time of year also means soup season. All the warm and cozy recipes. All the Fall candles and comfy clothes. It's my absolute favorite!
This Pork Wonton Soup is one of my all-time favorites. The broth is out of this world, I use frozen wontons to make my job easier, and the end result is a soup that will warm you on the chilliest of days and is light enough for the middle of summer. Make this once and I promise you'll do it over and over again!
what's in it
Ground Pork and Chinese 5 Spice Seasoning - This is my preferred protein for this soup. It cooks quickly and the flavor pairs perfectly with Asian-inspired dishes
Baby Bok Choy, Red Onion, Mushrooms - The veggies I prefer. I used an umami mix for the mushrooms, but use whatever you have and what you love!
Tamari or Soy Sauce, Fish Sauce, Toasted Sesame Oil, Ginger, Garlic - Flavor powerhouses. You don't need many ingredients for this amazing soup, but these pack a punch! And, don't be afraid of fish sauce. It gives very specific salty flavor that is absolutely incredible. Just don't sniff it.
Instant Pot Chicken Bone Broth - I use my homemade chicken bone broth because it's the best. It's better for you and tastes amazing. And, it's easy. And, it costs next to nothing. You should try it.
Frozen or Fresh Wontons - Use your favorite or just substitute with rice noodles. The amount of wontons I can consume in one sitting should earn me a trophy. I would would make sure you have plenty.

how to Make it and helpful hints
To begin the Pork Wonton Soup, we will first sear the bok choy in avocado oil on med-high heat. This gives the bok choy extra flavor and color. I love doing this instead of just throwing it into the broth. We like extra flavor, so don't skip this part!
Once the bok choy is seared and color has developed, remove it and throw in the ground pork and Chinese 5 spice seasoning. Cook until the pork is browned. Drain any excess fat and then add in the onion and mushrooms, cooking these until they soften just a bit.
Next goes the garlic and ginger along with the broth, tamari or soy sauce, fish sauce, and toasted sesame oil. Bring this to a low simmer and add the seared bok choy back to the pot.
Once the broth begins to simmer, add the wontons and cook until they begin to float - approximately 5-6 minutes. That's it! Just serve up in bowls and garnish with chili crisp, green onions, and toasted sesame seeds!
And, try to have just one bowl. I dare you.

recipe frequently asked questions
Is this pork wonton soup recipe gluten-free?
The soup portion of this recipe is gluten-free as long as you use tamari instead of soy sauce. As for the wontons, you would need to find a gluten-free option here. You could even forgo the wontons and add rice noodles. This would give you a wonderful result and a delicious soup!
Is this pork wonton soup dairy-free?
This recipe is absolutely dairy-free. Just be sure to double check the ingredients of the wontons you use just to make sure there is no sneaky dairy ingredients included.
Can I use other vegetables aside from mushrooms and bok choy?
You can use whatever veggies you like in this soup! Anything from broccoli and asparagus to carrots and celery would be amazing.
And, if you cannot find or do not have access to baby bok choy, use cabbage. Furthermore, if you want to make this recipe even easier, throw in a bag of coleslaw mix! No chopping necessary!
What other proteins would work in this wonton soup recipe?
I'm using ground pork because I love this protein with Asian-inspired recipes. You do you, boo and use what you love! Ground beef or chicken would be great. You could also keep this recipe vegetarian and add extra veg to the soup. You cannot make a wrong choice here!
Where do I get my wontons/dumplings?
Thankfully, wontons and dumplings are easily found in most grocery stores and supermarkets. The frozen wontons I'm using for this recipe came from Targeyyyy (aka Target aka my favorite aisle strolling store).
You can even find fresh wontons and dumplings in the sushi section of your supermarkets.
Use what you love and what you can find. All that matters is that you love this recipe and make it your own!
let's talk about broth
As with most things, homemade is better. I have gotten into the very good habit of saving all of our chicken carcasses from roasted and rotisserie chickens and making bone broth. Its beyond easy, super healthy, and tastes soooooooo much better than the stuff you can buy in the box. I highly recommend you try it. Not only do I make mine in an instant pot now, but it also makes this pork wonton soup shine!
However, there are many amazing options for broth available for purchase now. Broth selections have improved greatly in the past couple of years. If you are purchasing your broth from the store, buy a good quality one. I makes a massive difference in taste.

storage and reheating instructions
- Leftovers of this soup will be better if you do not store the wontons in the soup. The wrappers can and will absorb the broth and will fall apart upon reheating.
- Use only the amount of wontons you plan on eating in one sitting.
- To reheat, bring the brothy soup part of the recipe to a simmer and simply cook fresh wontons in that before serving.
- This soup will stay good in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- You can freeze the broth part of the soup for up to 3 months.
