let's chat!

I love a quick and easy bread recipe. This Beer Bread is just such a recipe. All you do is mix everything together in a bowl, dump that in a loaf pan, let it bake, and voila! A warm, savory bread with the most amazing buttery crust is on the table ready for dunking or eating with salty butter.

Serve it with soup or chili on cold days. It's great for holiday tables with family and friends. My kid's love it for a comforting snack, and I have been known to slice it for sandwiches. This recipe is too easy and too good not to enjoy all the time.

how to make beer bread

This is the really exciting part of this recipe. All you have to do to make this amazing Beer Bread recipe is mix everything in a bowl, pour it into a loaf pan, and bake it. That's it.

The dough

Begin by measuring the flour. You want to lightly add it in the measuring cups and not pack it. You don't want to add too much flour to this recipe or the bread can become dense. Light measure or sift it. Add that to the mixing bowl.

Next, measure out the remaining dry ingredients. The baking powder acts as the leavening agent so make sure you measure that exactly. The kosher salt, granulated garlic and onion go in and help make this bread super flavorful. I cannot cook savory recipes without adding garlic and onion somewhere, so there that is.

Next, in a glass measuring cup mix the room temperature beer and honey together. Use a good quality, tasty beer. You can even use a non-alcoholic one. I would just suggest not using a boring light beer.

Pour the beer/honey mixture into the mixing bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined and no more. The dough will look quite shaggy and you'll be tempted to mix it more. If you overmix, the bread can deflate and become dense. You don't want that.

Baking, cooling, and serving

To create the most wonderful, crunchy crust pour the melted butter over the top of the loaf. The recipe calls for ¼ of a cup of melted butter. If you use a little more, I'd probably give you a high-five. Butter just makes life better so exact measurements in this case need not apply. I like to top mine with a little flaky sea salt and fresh ground pepper - for flavor and because it's pretty.

Pour the Beer Bread mixture into a parchment lined loaf pan. Bake in a preheated 375° oven for about an hour. The bread is done when a toothpick inserted into the middle of the loaf comes out clean. I start checking mine around the 55 minute mark.

After the bread is done baking, let it cool in the loaf pan for 5 minutes. Then, carefully remove it from the pan. Let it cool on a wire rack for 10-15 more minutes or as long as your self restraint can hold out.

Slice the bread, slather it with more luscious, salty butter and enjoy!

recipe frequently asked questions

What kind of beer is the best?

A tasty one. I have used a non-alcoholic IPA that I love or I will use a darker beer that my husband has hanging out in the fridge. For this recipe, I want a beer with good flavor. I try not to use a light beer unless that's all I have to work with. This recipe is so simple and has few ingredients, so make sure you're using the most flavorful options you can get.

My dough looks very shaggy. Are you sure I don't need to mix it thoroughly?

I am positive. This is a very important part of this recipe. Do not over mix the dough. When it has just barely come together that's when you stop with the mixing. It will be shaggy and lumpy and that's just what we want. If you can resist the temptation, your Beer Bread will be light and lovely instead of a dense brick. Stay strong. Don't over mix.

tips and tricks

  • Use room temperature ingredients.
  • Don't overmix the dough. It can cause the beer bread to deflate like a sad balloon. It can also cause the bread to become too dense.
  • When measuring the flour, do not pack it into the measuring cups. You want to either sift it or lightly fill the cups. Light and airy is the name of the game.
  • Let the bread cool slightly in the loaf pan, and then a few more minutes on a wire rack. This will help slicing become easier.
