Pull Up A Chair & Let's Chat!

Most homemade BBQ sauces lean heavily on sweetness. This one doesn't.

The secret starts with bacon fat and onions, which build a rich, savory foundation before the ketchup, vinegar, mustard, and spices ever hit the pot. A splash of Worcestershire at the end brings everything together with just the right amount of smoky, tangy depth.

This Easy Homemade BBQ Sauce is fantastic on ribs, pulled pork, chicken, burgers, and anything coming off the smoker. It's also great as a dipping sauce, sandwich spread, or even a pizza sauce when you're feeling adventurous.

Once you make it from scratch, those bottles on the grocery store shelf start looking a lot less interesting.

Why You'll Love This Easy Homemade BBQ Sauce

  • Savory, not overly sweet: Bacon fat, onions, and Worcestershire create rich flavor without tasting like candy.
  • Made with pantry staples: No specialty ingredients required.
  • Ready in about 25 minutes: Quick enough for weeknight grilling and last-minute cookouts.
  • Easy to customize: Adjust the sweetness, tang, or heat to make it your own.
  • Perfect for more than BBQ: Great on ribs, pulled pork, chicken, burgers, sandwiches, and as a dipping sauce.

What You'll Need & Why

  • Bacon, onion, and garlic: The savory foundation that sets this BBQ sauce apart from sweeter store-bought versions.
  • Ketchup: Provides the classic tomato base and gives the sauce its rich texture.
  • Apple cider vinegar and yellow mustard: Add tang and balance the richness.
  • Worcestershire sauce: Brings deep, savory flavor and a little extra complexity.
  • Brown sugar: Adds just enough sweetness to round everything out without overpowering the sauce.
  • Smoked paprika, kosher salt, and black pepper: The finishing touches that bring smoky, balanced flavor to every bite.

The Recipe Rundown

  • Render the bacon: Cook the bacon until the fat is released, then remove the bacon and save it for another use.
  • Build the flavor base: Sauté the onion in the bacon fat until softened and fragrant.
  • Simmer the sauce: Add the remaining ingredients and cook until the flavors meld together and the sauce thickens slightly.
  • Blend until smooth: Use an immersion blender or countertop blender to create a silky, restaurant-quality texture.
  • Serve or store: Use immediately on ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and burgers, or refrigerate for later.

Tips For the Best Easy Homemade BBQ Sauce

A few simple tips will help your Easy Homemade BBQ Sauce turn out rich, balanced, and full of flavor.

  • Take your time with the onions: Let them soften before adding the remaining ingredients to build a deeper, more savory flavor.
  • Blend until smooth: An immersion blender creates a silky texture that rivals your favorite bottled sauces.
  • Taste before serving: Add a little more brown sugar for sweetness, vinegar for tang, or smoked paprika for extra smoke.
  • Let it cool: The flavors continue to develop as the sauce rests and cools.
  • Make a double batch: This sauce stores well and is perfect to have on hand for ribs, chicken, burgers, and pulled pork.
