Pull Up A Chair & Let's Chat!

Once you realize how easy this ranch is to make, the bottle from the store stops making sense.

This buttermilk ranch comes together in about 5 minutes and works as both a creamy dressing and a thick, scoopable dip. It’s tangy, bold, and the kind of thing you’ll keep in the fridge and reach for all week—whether you’re dressing a salad or dunking pizza, wings, and veggies.

Why This Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Works

  • Pantry staples only: Nothing fancy, nothing hard to find, nothing you’ll use once and forget.
  • Buttermilk base: Tangy, creamy, and unmistakably classic ranch flavor.
  • The secret ingredient: A pinch of Tajín adds brightness and balance without overpowering.
  • Ridiculously versatile: Salads, veggies, chicken — and yes, pizza deserves ranch this good.

What You'll Need & Why

  • Sour cream: The creamy base that gives this ranch body and richness.
  • Buttermilk: Adds that classic tang and thins the dressing to dip- or drizzle-perfect consistency.
  • Mayonnaise: Just enough to round everything out and boost creaminess.
  • Dried herbs & seasonings (chives, dill, granulated garlic, granulated onion, parsley, kosher salt): The classic ranch flavor builders, balanced and pantry-friendly.
  • Tajín: A small pinch adds a bright, tangy kick that makes this ranch unforgettable.
  • Fresh lime juice: Wakes everything up and plays beautifully with the Tajín.
  • Freshly ground black pepper: Adds gentle heat and depth — season to taste.

How to Make Ranch Dressing or Dip

This recipe works as both a pourable dressing and a thick, scoopable dip—it just depends on the consistency you’re after.

  • Adjust as needed – Start thicker, then thin it out gradually until you hit your perfect texture.
  • For ranch dressing – Add a little more buttermilk until it’s smooth and pourable. Perfect for salads and drizzling.
  • For ranch dip – Use less buttermilk or add a bit more sour cream to keep it thick and scoopable. Ideal for veggies, wings, and pizza.

Swaps & Variations

This ranch recipe is flexible and easy to adjust based on what you have.

  • No buttermilk? – Mix milk with a splash of lemon juice or vinegar for an easy substitute.
  • Adjust the herbs – Use fresh herbs if you have them, or skip the dill if it’s not your thing.
  • Add a little heat – A pinch of cayenne or a bit of jalapeño adds a subtle kick.
  • Swap the citrus – Lemon or lime both work for brightness.

Tips For The Best Buttermilk Ranch

A few simple tips will give you the best flavor and texture every time.

  • Use full-fat dairy – It makes the ranch richer, creamier, and more flavorful.
  • Let it chill – Rest for at least 30 minutes so the flavors fully develop.
  • Taste and adjust before serving – Cold dulls seasoning, so adjust salt, pepper, or Tajín after chilling.

Equipment

  • measuring spoons
  • measuring cups
  • mixing bowl
  • whisk

Ingredients

  • ⅔ cup sour cream
  • ⅓ cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoon dried chives
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
  • ½ teaspoon granulated garlic
  • ½ teaspoon granulated onion
  • ¼ teaspoon dried parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon tajin see note below
  • juice of half a lime
  • fresh ground pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Mix all ingredients until smooth and well combined. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving so the flavors can fully develop.

Notes

The tajin is optional, but it gives this dressing that zingy tang that I look for. It makes a difference and I highly recommend it.
This recipe makes about 1 ⅓ cups dressing. I calculated the serving size as a 2 tablespoon serving.

How to Use Buttermilk Ranch

This ranch is the kind of thing you’ll reach for all week—it works just as well as a dressing as it does a dip.

  • Drizzle it – Perfect over simple salads, chopped salads, or grain bowls.
  • Dip with it – Serve with fresh veggies, wings, chicken tenders, or fries.
  • Spread it – Add to wraps, sandwiches, or burgers for a creamy, tangy layer.
  • Finish with it – Drizzle over tacos, roasted veggies, or grilled chicken.
  • Don’t skip pizza night – Use it for crust dunking or a light drizzle over hot slices.

Storage

  • Refrigerate: Store buttermilk ranch dressing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • Stir before using: Some separation is normal—just give it a quick stir to bring it back together.
  • Keep it cold: Because it’s made with fresh dairy, avoid leaving it out for extended periods.

You Asked, I Answered

I don't have buttermilk. Can I make my own?

Yes. Mix 1 cup milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar and let it sit for a few minutes before using.

What is Tajin?

Tajín is a tangy seasoning made from chili peppers, lime, and salt. It adds brightness and balance without making the ranch spicy.

Can I use this as a dip or just a dressing?

Both. This recipe works as a dressing or a dip—just adjust the consistency depending on how you plan to use it.

Can I make this buttermilk ranch ahead of time?

Yes. In fact, it tastes better after chilling for at least 30 minutes, which allows the flavors to fully develop.
