Tested, tasted, and devoured in my own kitchen — because if it’s not crave-worthy, it doesn’t make it to the blog.

This is one of those recipes that proves homemade really does win every time — more flavor, better crunch, and zero mystery ingredients.
When you make your own savory snack mix, you’re in full control. You decide the salt level, the buttery richness, and exactly what goes in the bowl. No store-bought sodium bombs, no preservatives with a longer shelf life than us — just real ingredients and real flavor.
The best part? I almost never make this snack mix the same way twice. I start with the basics, then raid the pantry for whatever nuts, pretzels, or extras sound good in the moment. It’s flexible, forgiving, and basically impossible to mess up.
Here's why we keep a batch around all the time:
- Simple pantry base: Chex cereal, butter, and seasonings create a dependable foundation that always delivers crunch and flavor.
- Low-and-slow bake: Gentle oven heat dries everything out evenly for crisp, never-burnt results.
- Totally customizable: Swap nuts, add pretzels, or throw in crackers depending on what you have on hand.
- Big flavor payoff: Buttery richness, salty crunch, and bold seasoning hit that snackable sweet spot every time.

What You'll Need and Why
The Butter Base
- Butter – The rich, savory backbone that coats every bite and carries the seasoning.
- Worcestershire sauce – Adds deep, savory umami and balances the richness.
The Seasoning Blend
- Everything Bagel seasoning – Brings garlic, onion, and sesame crunch.
- All-purpose seasoning – Rounds everything out with balanced savory flavor.
- Kosher salt – Enhances and sharpens all the flavors.
The Crunchy Mix-Ins
- Pretzels or pretzel chips – Salty crunch with great structure for soaking up flavor.
- Corn Chex, Rice Chex, Wheat Chex – The classic trio for texture contrast and even toasting.
- Oyster crackers – Light, crisp bites that toast up beautifully.
The Nuts & Extras
- Peanuts – Salty, hearty crunch that holds up well in the oven.
- Cashews – Buttery and slightly sweet for balance.
- Sesame seeds (optional) – Extra nuttiness and toasty flavor if you want it.
A Note About The Seasoning
I use my all-purpose seasoning for this recipe. We put it on everything and it's so easy to make. It's a perfect blend of savory, salty, with the right amount of herb flavor. I highly recommend you try it!
If you use another all-purpose seasoning with this savory snack mix, be mindful that it will have a different salt content.
Swaps & Flavor-Boosting Variations
The beauty of this savory snack mix is its flexibility — toss in whatever you’ve got and make it your own.
Mix-in ideas:
- Cheez-Its, Goldfish, or mini saltines
- Bagel or rye chips
- Cheerios or other cereals
- Pistachios, almonds, or your favorite nuts/seeds
I used peanuts and cashews because that’s what my kids demanded — but anything crunchy and salty combo you like works. You can even leave them out completely if thats what you want!
Tips & Tricks
- Coat evenly: Stir until every piece is glossy and well covered — no butter puddles or dry corners.
- Use two baking sheets: Don’t crowd the pan or you’ll end up with sad, soggy bits instead of golden crunch.
- Let it cool: Fresh from the oven it’s still soft. Give it a few minutes, then snack away.
- Never bag it warm: Warm mix traps steam = soggy mix (and possibly mold). Let it cool completely before storing.
- Crunch refresh: If you live somewhere humid and it softens over time, pop it in the oven at 200 °F for 10–15 mins to restore crunch.
